BambooMoves Provides a Welcoming Community Center and Sanctuary for Those Interested in Yoga

By Courtney Clark

BambooMoves Yoga in Forest Hills is more than just a fitness practice. Aiming to connect the mind, body, breath, and soul, the owners conduct their business and teachings based on the yogic ethical principles of yamas and niyamas. With Bamboo's teachings, instructors help students become like the plant itself: strong and flexible.

BambooMoves began in 2007 and has been growing ever since. According to the website, it's "a welcoming community for people of all backgrounds to train their body, mind, and spirit in a nurturing yet challenging practice." Their mission is to train students how to experience more peace and happiness through the yogi practice that "inspires the body, transcends the mind, and uplifts the spirit." Each month, the studio focuses on something specific, such as concentration, to learn various ways to focus the mind.

The studio offers classes for a variety of ability levels. Gentle Yoga or Chair Yoga is best for those with mobility limitations while including gentle movements, stretching, and breathing with restorative poses. Level 2 builds from Level 1, both of which focus on breath awareness. Level 3, or Advanced Vinyasa, is more rigorous. The website explains that this class holds more advanced postures with focus on "breath control, bandhas, chakras and utilizing pranayama to increase energy and deepen inner awareness."

BambooMoves also has All Level or AM Yoga for those with yoga asana experience while also being a good fit for beginners or advanced practitioners. Family Yoga is a relaxing space for parents and kids, and Prenatal Yoga is safe for soon-to-be-mothers of all stages of pregnancy. The studio even has beginner Tai Chi classes, an ancient Chinese martial art that improves health and focus with "serene, sequential forms."

Beyond yoga, the studio offers other services such as Energy Healing and Hypnosis. Energy Healing, the website explains, is "a technique for restoring, circulating and balancing your natural life-force energy" to improve senses of well-being on "physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels."

The service may be performed as a direct application of energy or with massage techniques. Hypnosis can be used for subconscious reprogramming. The studio's hypnotist, John Mongiovi, is a Certified Member of the National Guild of Hypnotists and can help with habits and compulsions, sleeplessness, weight loss, and much more.

BambooMoves is a highly-rated studio that wants to help students focus the mind and connect with their body and soul. With all levels of classes for all stages of practitioners, the studio provides something for everyone while improving the body and mind.
