Brooklyn Boulders Inspires a Love for Climbing and a Thirst for Life

By Marina I. Jokic

Residing in the old Daily News parking garage, Brooklyn Boulders is the quintessential climber's paradise. The biggest climbing facility in the city, the studio is an amalgam of vibrant rock climbing walls, artistic graffiti, a lounge and plenty of space to practice yoga, parkour, and slacklining (a type of tight rope walking). With a mock terrain of faux rock formation that is nearly indistinguishable from the real thing, Brooklyn Boulders delivers a serious climbing experience.

The 22,000-square-foot building was built at the turn of the 20th century to serve as a distribution center for the Daily News, a garage of sorts that housed delivery trucks until the early 90's. The building's cavernous halls were ideal for a climbing facility, offering unobstructed and ample space for the 30-foot rock walls that provide an undulating landscape for its visitors.

Marketing manager Maria Jean Sullivan likens her job to a community organizer, bringing people together to enjoy excellent climbing conditions, a slew of fitness and yoga classes, and an enviable lineup of performance artists and live musicians.

"We are more than just a climbing gym," she said. "We strive for connectivity through our community, which is [the] favorite part of my job."

Another unique aspect of the studio is the Brooklyn Boulders Expeditions (BKBX), immersive, outdoor experiences intended to launch participants into authentic adventures. Fostering human connection through outdoor sports and competitions forges a genuine community at BKB. Activities include hiking, camping, climbing, cooking, and exploring new and exciting locations all over the country.

To the BKB community, Brooklyn represents much more than just a city. It's a state of mind born out of the creative clash of cultures, a community filled with a zest for life and a curiosity for the unknown. BKB's philosophy is about bringing together the diverse and sometimes incongruous elements of Brooklyn life and letting them flourish through a shared experience.

"We are bringing Brooklyn to every city we go to with facilities in New York, Chicago, and Boston, spreading the bkblove and that sense of community to other urban areas through climbing, fitness, art, and events," Sullivan said. "At Brooklyn Boulders, you will find unconventional experiences that engage the imagination, passion, and physical potential."
