The True Definition of a Homemade Breakfast

By Elisha Neubauer

In the hustle and bustle of Brooklyn, it seems surprising to find a intimate dining experience, but Monica Byrne and Leisah Swenson serve up charm in heaps at Homemade. Once a home-goods store, the now-café serves up brunch in a picturesque location that feels more like a friend's living room than a popular restaurant. Three elegant white linen couches, simple wooden chairs, and minimalist counters make the space feel clean and crisp- and the service is friendly and fast.

When asked what she feels makes a brunch exceptional, Leisah Swenson, owner of Homemade, says, "A really good brunch starts with how long you have to wait for a table and was it worth the wait. We often have a line in the summertime, and as such, we want your brunch experience to be one of relaxation and tasty rewards. While you wait for your table, you are provided with free, delicious, fresh brewed coffee so you can get your fix while you wait for your table."

Homemade was designed to provide customers an oasis from a typically-hectic world, with a beautiful back garden, hearty local food, and a calming atmosphere. "We want our guests to feel like they are on a mini vacation from the minute they arrive," Swenson remarks.

Homemade's specials are decided by the available goods at that week's farmers' market, as the majority of the menu is crafted from locally-produced ingredients. This freshness is consistently evident in each and every dish served. Menu items such as the Dried Cherry and Pecan Scones are legendary in the area, bringing customers from all across New York State.

Featured in New York Magazine's Restaurant section, New York Racked, and on Heritage Radio Network, Homemade has earned its fame as a hip, chic locale to enjoy a fabulous brunch in a relaxing environment. Patrons on websites such as UrbanSpoon have given the space an astounding 4.5 star overall rating, referring to the atmosphere as "Romantic and Cozy" and calling it a "Treasured Gem." The food earned a full 5 stars, called "Fresh and delicious" and "Sublime."

Currently, Homemade is only open two days a week- Saturday and Sunday- as they are still recovering from Hurricane Sandy. They are in the process of replacing the damaged equipment and hope to return to dinner service and extended hours soon. Until then, you can get your fix by ordering off-premises catering for your events and parties.
