Brooklyn's MIXTAPE Cover Band Has Been Rocking Parties Since 2011

By Marina I. Jokic

When you visit MIXTAPE's website, you'll see promos like "actively not your parents' wedding band" and "set out to evolve a stagnant industry." These might seem like blanket statements that we are all too familiar with, just marketing language to most. But when it comes to MIXTAPE's stellar reputation, the hype is fully substantiated.

MIXTAPE gives performances that feature a seemingly infinite selection of contemporary and classic artists as well as some more obscure songs. In short, they are not conformists.

"No disco, no Black Eyed Peas, but everything else is fair game," founder and vocalist Melanie Flannery said. "Our repertoire is large enough that we can play an 80's-heavy wedding one night, a twang-heavy wedding the next, and an indie, hipster-heavy wedding after that with very little overlap."

The band's basic configuration consists of female and male vocals, rhythm guitarist, lead electric guitarist, electric bassist, keyboardist, and drummer. For bigger events, MIXTAPE can also add strings and horns for a more complete sound and feel. The band members, conservatory-trained musicians, are also educated in classical music, jazz, and bluegrass for more formal occasions.

Hailed by VOGUE magazine as one of the few cover bands in the country that can take your event "from just lovely to legendary," MIXTAPE prides itself on offering a disco-free zone and likes the mantra "no to the Bee Gees, yes to the Black Keys." At MIXTAPE events, you are likely to hear modern-day indie favorites like Phoenix, MGMT, Beck, and Arcade Fire or grunge smashes such as Weezer, Nirvana, The Pixies, and Pavement.

"About 350 songs right now, running the gamut from 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough' to 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' so the best word to describe what we play is definitely eclectic," Flannery said. "We have degrees in music performance from the fanciest conservatories, but we also kneel at the altar of the almighty Rock' n Roll."

The band is a serial winner of the Best of the Knot award in Manhattan in 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2017. MIXTAPE also blogs for The Huffington Post wedding section and has been featured in Brides, Modern Weddings, Style Me Pretty, and New York Magazine to name a few heavyweights.

Just this past May, the band performed as part of the A Night of Nasty concert which donated all proceeds to Planned Parenthood of New York. Mixing in worthy causes with great entertainment is MIXTAPE's forte. They've performed in well-known venues like the Bell House, Music Hall of Williamsburg, and even at the 2013 U.S. Open Tennis Championships.
