Design Rx for Your Home Remodel: An Interview with Emil Fikar of EJ Fikar Contracting, LLC

By Emil Fikar

Please tell us a little bit about your company and the services you provide.

EJ Fikar Contracting was started in 1986 as a small remodeling company. In 2005, I took on the LLC and continue to serve the Hudson Valley. My service area is mostly in Ulster county a 30 mile radius. I do a lot of work for city residents on the second properties vacation homes, summer homes. I have in the past built homes from the ground up, and built small and larger additions. Currently I prefer to do kitchens remodels, bathroom, and interior drywall. I have a full referral book for subcontractors if needed, licensed plumbers, and electricians.

How common is it to for homeowners to hire an architect for a remodeling project? What are the benefits of this compared with some of the other options?

Additions done right always have an architectural set of stamped plans. It is money well spent. The cost for the plans is about 20% of the total cost of the job it helps prevents mistakes, like having to remove walls that the home owner wanted until they were built. The architect you choose should come out to your house, sit down discuss the addition, take pictures, elevations, and measurements of the proposed job, and work back and forth to develop your plan.

What are some important questions to ask an architect before beginning the design process?

Each home is individual built in a style of its own, you must ask: Can I do this ? Will it fit the building site? Do I need approvals from the town or city? Can I afford it? What will this cost, and how long should it take? When you have answers to these questions then you are on the road to a good project outcome.

What are some of the biggest issues that architects and homeowners face when it comes to remodeling a house?

Hidden behind the walls, issues may arise such as insect damage, structural changes, rerouting of piping , or lack of proper framing all occur and can be handled with timely change orders.

What advice do you have for homeowners to help make sure their remodel goes as smoothly as possible?

Always make certain your contractor has liability, workers compensation insurance, and have those documents e-mailed to you from the insurance agent. Second, see photos of finished work, see their contracting Facebook page, web site and get 3 referrals minimum.
