Resilience Paddle Sports Introduces All Ages to Stress Relieving Water Activities

By Pamela Sosnowski

Since 2013 Resilience Paddle Sports has been helping to alleviate the daily stress endured by residents of the Tri-State Area by encouraging them to take up a water sport. Based at Pier 13 in Hoboken, Resilience Paddle Sports teaches kayaking, paddle boarding, and paddle board yoga and leads group tours to participants of all ages on the Hudson River, which has been cleaned up by volunteers and non-profit groups and provides a safe public waterway for all to enjoy.

"At Resilience, we believe that outdoor activities are empowering and can be used to build personal resilience as well as awareness for the natural world," founder and director Noelle Thurlow said. "We are a mission driven business and we offer a wide variety of kayak and stand-up paddleboarding programs on the beautiful Hudson River."

Kayaking and paddle boarding lessons are held during the warmer months and range from beginner to more advanced safety techniques and race training. Once a kayaker or paddle boarder has successfully completed a beginner's class, they can partake in one of several guided tours that take in the beauty of the New York City skyline, Statue of Liberty, and more. The Manhattan Moonrise tour is one of the company's most popular outings, as kayakers and paddle boarders get to experience a sunset while out on the water.

The fun isn't just regulated to adults; Resilience Paddle Sports offers several classes and tours that allow children and even infants to partake in a water sport. The tour company runs a few youth summer camps for specific age groups including kids as young as eight through teens. There are also family programs designed for mothers and their daughters and the Mommy/Daddy and Me kayaking session specifically for children ages two through six that accompany a parent on a kayaking excursion.

"Our programs are designed for youth of all ages and are priced to serve the community on weekdays during the summer," Thurlow said. "Paddle Camp focuses on school age youth. Teen SUP is geared towards teenagers and we also have an internship program for high school students. Even infants are welcome in the Mommy/Daddy and Me kayak classes!"

From May through September, Resilience Paddle Sports can accommodate requests from local camps and school groups seeking a half or full day of kayaking or paddleboard lessons for their students or campers. The youth programs don't just teach teamwork, confidence, and athletic skills, but also help young participants understand the importance of preserving waterways and develop empathy the wildlife they support. Kids get to participate in a catch and release activity where they get to observe and often touch sea creatures caught with nets at the estuary. For Thurlow, this is one of her favorite parts of her job.

"In my view, they are our neighbors, but are often overlooked," she said. "We've seen all kinds of marine organisms including shrimp, crabs, eels and toad fish, plus comb jellies, snails, tunicates and amphipods. Additionally, we've had diamondback terrapin turtles travelling along the waterfront with horseshoe crabs and many species of birds including, herons and osprey."

She also loves working with people and introducing them to the beauty of floating along the water plus the exercise that comes along with it. It was her own love of the water that inspired her to launch Resilience Paddle Sports and introduce the stress-busting benefits of paddling to others.

"Getting out on the Hudson River or into the harbor provides an opportunity to get away from the city, focus on the present moment, and reconnect to the natural world," she said. "Even though we are not really that far away, being out on the water for an hour or two feels refreshing."
