REVERSE Gallery Offers Experimental Art Ahead of the Curve

By Elisha Neubauer

When it comes to arts districts, Brooklyn has long been known for being ahead of the curve. REVERSE gallery is helping to push that curve further by cultivating new and experimental forms of artistic expression. A nonprofit organization, REVERSE considers itself to be a multidisciplinary workspace, featuring exhibitions, workshops, lectures, screenings, performances and other events, in addition to providing an open space for the nurturing of ideas and experimentation.

Run by artists, for artists, the staff at REVERSE feels it is important to expose and support the artists involved in this new wave of expression.

"At REVERSE we are particularly invested in advancing timely, experimental and innovative art and the artists that produce it. New technologies present a lot of novel possibilities, however, often times they can also be distracting," says Andrea Wolf, gallery owner. "We are interested in artists who use these tools to make interesting comments on the world around us. The artists we work with have bold visions, exploring new forms of expression that move beyond what is presented on the wall. Yet due to the very experimental nature of these artists' work, they are more likely to face greater roadblocks."

Wolf goes on to explain that, at REVERSE, they attempt to generate an environment in which these artists can explore and nurture their ideas, allowing them to fulfill their vision. "By connecting them to resources and offering occasions to show their work, we serve as a bridge between visionary ideas and the greater public," she says. Their mission is to provide a dynamic roster of activities, presenting inventive projects that challenge the contemporary art world, while simultaneously offering better opportunities for artists.

"We seek to provide an active calendar with six to seven exhibits each year, along with performances, talks, screenings, and other events," Wolf remarks. "With these events we hope to facilitate a space for discussion, interaction, and artistic collaboration. Our experience also includes promoting and running unique workshops, which are designed to serve the specific needs of the media-oriented community of artists around us." Due to their desire to incorporate new voices into their programming, REVERSE holds an open call for curatorial purposes annually. This open call allows for face-to-face conversations with up-and-coming artists and curators.

The space contains eight private studios available for rent by artists of all walks of life. These private workspaces range in size from 110 to 250 square feet. The main gallery space, coming in at 1,000 square feet, features six to seven exhibits each year, as well as hosting talks, performances, screenings, and additional events. When not booked, the gallery space is available to artists and other individuals and can be used for pop-up shows, film productions, photo shoots and other special events.

As a nonprofit organization, REVERSE gallery is dependent on the support and donations of its surrounding community in order to continue providing resources, space, and support for local artists. To show your support, make sure to attend the exciting shows, exhibitions, talks, and much more that are offered by REVERSE art space. Charitable, tax-deductible donations are also an appreciated way to help the gallery continue to cultivate groundbreaking artistic projects for many years to come.
