That's Amore! Enjoy Famous Pizza Pie by the $5 Slice at Di Fara Pizza

By Joshua Grammer

When you're in need of that taste of old Napoli, head to Brooklyn, NY, where Di Fara Pizza has been serving up world famous pizza for 50 years. Fresh basil and savory olive oil top the hot slices that Dominico DeMarco and his family bake for loyal patrons and newcomers alike.

According to Maggie Mieles, Domenico's daughter, what sets Di Fara pizza ahead of any other pizza place in NYC is their exclusive use of quality ingredients in every slice of every pie. In fact, the majority of the ingredients of the pizza at Di Fara are imported, adding to the unique flavor that the use of New York water already brings to Big Apple pizza. Each pie is considered a work of art- and the artist is none other than Dom Demarco.

"My dad, Domenico De Marco, who is now 78 years old has made 90 percent of the pizza there in the last 49 years," says Mieles. "People come from all over the world to watch him stand in one spot putting special attention to each and every pie."

Mieles also tells us that Di Fara uses gas ovens instead of brick, thus creating a quicker cook time for each pie and adding a distinct flavor and crispness. Add that to Dom's signature recipe that calls for two different kinds of cheeses- and you have one amazing pizza creation.

Although pizza is the star at Di Fara, the calzones hold their own, filled with gooey cheese and folded nice and tight. Order one with plain cheese or in carnivorous conjunction with some other salty, savory meat.

Happily, Di Fara is BYOB, so bring a bottle or two to enjoy with your piping hot slices. Beer drinkers rejoice: you are welcome to bring the latest bomber of craft brew with you as well. There are a handful of liquor stores local to this Brooklyn eatery you can stop at on your way to pizza pie heaven.

Don't be discouraged if you encounter a long wait: Di Fara's pizza is popular. In fact, it is so popular that Mieles tells us that waits can be up to two hours. And no wonder: Zagat has rated Di Fara's the Best Pizzeria in New York for eight years running. So bring some friends, bring a bottle of wine, and get in line.
