Ins and Outs of Your Bathroom Remodel: An Interview with Jean Peterson of Peterson Home Improvements

By Jean Peterson

Tell us a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

We are a small family-owned business. We started in Westchester County in 1989 & moved to Dutchess County in 1990. We do residential remodeling offering a wide range of services including additions, kitchens, baths, decking, siding, windows and more.

When people want to remodel their bathroom, where should they start?

Homeowners should begin with a vision. Whether they are considering a kitchen renovation or siding replacement, it's helpful to look at photos and visit showrooms. For siding, we suggest that the customer look at other homes that resemble theirs in style and size in order to get an idea of how a particular siding color may appear on their home.

What are some of the most important decisions homeowners will need to make during the bathroom design process?

During the design process the homeowner should consider the monetary value the renovation will add to the home. Also, their personal comfort should always be considered as well as whether energy efficiency is important and of course, the cost.

How is the budget typically set? What are some ways to help stay within budget?

Regarding a budget, we inform the homeowner of what the cost of labor is & the customer has control over the cost of materials. We present options for material concessions. Someone may spend $3500. or $35,000. on a bathroom renovation. Keep in mind, however, it is often true that we "get what we pay for".

Is there anything that a homeowner should know about working with a contractor during the remodel that they might not know?

Please be certain that the contractor is properly insured with Workers Compensation and that the workers are full-time skilled employees. Ask what subcontractors are used and what suppliers the contractor uses. The homeowner should be certain that the company is in good standing with the suppliers. You want to sign a contract & have the contractor sign it as well.

What is one of the most challenging parts of the remodel for a homeowner and do you have any advice about that?

It can be very challenging for a homeowner while undergoing a renovation. We suggest you do your research, be patient, ask questions, and meet with the owner face-to- face.

What's the best way for people to contact you and your company?

We can be contacted at 845-795-2590 or visit us at petersonhomeimprovement.com if you have any questions.

We wish you the best circumstances during your project whether big or small.
